More employers and colleges and universities use the Internet at work and in the classroom. A wider variety of information is available on the Internet than in books. Information is usually more current than the information in books. Saves the library money and gives patrons access to things that they might otherwise not have access to.

Safety on the Internet

Every online service provider has parental controls that block access to certain sites that the parent chooses. Internet Explorer and Netscape also have parental controls on them. You can also buy software like Cyber Patrol, CYBERsitter, Net Nanny,and SurfWatch.

Never give out your social security number over the internet. Make sure that when you give out any information over the WWW that the site you are using is secure. The address will start with https:// instead of just http:// if it is secure.

It is also important to keep your computer safe when you are on the internet.

You need to have an anti-virus program to keep viruses out. See the FTP section of the other parts of the Internet section of this site

Also, it is very important to have a personal Firewall installed on your computer especially if you have an internet connection that is always on. This prevents Trojans and people from hacking in to your computer and stealing your information or doing damage to your computer.  to keep and other people out of your computer. Future of the Internet

In an article in the USA WEEKEND January 23-25 called"A Whole New Net", Melissa Hendricks gives some things that will happen to the internet in the future. The internet will get faster and will need to grow to accommodate more people using the internet. Other applications in the works are remote medical diagnoses, digital libraries, and teleimmersion.
